Is "Pay As You Go" a Good Buy?

Buying a phone doesn't end the issue. After you bought it you have to decide what kind of service or calling plan is best for you. At this point you might ask yourself: is "pay as you go" a good buy? It may or may not be depending on the budget you have.

There is no easy answer to the is "pay as you go" a good buy question. Firstly this kind of plan requires a phone that isn't acquired as part of a contract. The phone must be unlocked or compatible with the network you are going to use. You have to buy a phone card for that specific carrier is priced up to 20$ and is used to add credit to your network carrier account.

If it is a good buy depends if you want to be tied to a contract or not. The pay as you go plan doesn't require a credit card and doesn't have a monthly fee or a contract. You only need to buy a phonecard which in practice pays your money to the phone service provider. You will need to add money at least every 90 days to keep your account active.

Call rates are usually higher than the rates of a standard plan and there usually are no other benefits. It is called like this because the fee for the used minutes are charged from your balance progressively and when your balance reaches 0 you need to purchase more credits to be able to make calls again. If you don't use any credit from your balance, it will not be lost and will accumulate over time as you will recharge often.

To answer the question: is "pay as you go" a good buy? you have to compare this kid of plan with the standard plan. This plan means an obligatory long-term contract, using a credit card, a monthly fee of minimum 20$. For this sum of money you have included minutes which if you do not use you lose. If you exceed them you will usually pay higher fees. The advantage is that you usually have bonuses or times when the fees are smaller or at some provider you get the phone free of charge.

So is it a good buy? It depends a lot on what are your needs. If you want to be free and have no obligations it is, if you want to spend less it is not.
